Andrea L. shares her top 5 must-do experiences from her recent trip to Scotland.
Hit ? Edinburgh Castle
Plan on spending a couple of hours at the castle. There is an audio tour that is helpful. There is no parking at the castle but a taxi can drop you off at the bottom of the castle. If you have limited mobility they provide a car to drive you up and back down the hill but there is still a lot of walking.
You can buy tickets for the castle beforehand which help you to avoid lines during busy times.
Hit ? Stirling Castle
There are free lives tours and they are wonderful at highlighting the importance of the castle historically. They have some children’s activities where they can dress up and take pictures. There are beautiful gardens on the castle grounds. Parking is right at the castle but on busy days come early to ensure a spot.
Hit ? Culloden Battlefields
This visitor center and battlefield give a good glimpse into Scotland’s fight for Independence under Bonny Prince Charlie. They do a good job of giving the history leading up to the battle and of the battle itself. It reminded me of some of the battlefields in the US from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars.
Hit ? Royal Yacht Britannia
For over 44 years the Royal Yacht served the Royal Family, traveling more than a million nautical miles to become one of the most famous ships in the world. To Her Majesty The Queen, Britannia provided the perfect Royal residence for glittering state visits, official receptions, Royal honeymoons and relaxing family holidays. For Great Britain, she was a majestic symbol of the Commonwealth and a proud ambassador generating billions of pounds in trade deals. This was a very interesting tour.
Hit ? Thai Orchid Restaurant
When you think of Scotland you don’t generally think of Thai food but this is fantastic Thai food right by the castle in Edinburgh. It has some of the best Massaman curry I have ever had. Go before the 1 pm cannon because it was packed after that. There is also one in Glasgow which you can
